I am not Catholic, but I like the seven deadlies because they’ve been bandied about since the 4th century and have inspired many works of art and literature.
Removing the influence of monks, there are these abominations from Proverbs 6: 16-19:
These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
But, the monks were onto something crafting a list of vises to work with because these are not as zippy and give much pause: False witness? Discord sowing? It’s hard to walk out the door in the morning with a vow not to sow discord; much easier to commit to not getting all greedy and gluttonous with the work donuts on Friday.
But, Proverbs’ warning is more thorough. Sowing discord encompasses a lot of things – gossip, hatred, cruelty, selfishness and pride. Wicked imaginations, when boiled down only to lust, leaves out lots of other bad, bad imaginings.
All that said; I’m going with The Seven. Why? Because this is a blog, we all scan blogs for zippy, and now I have a post for each day of the week. Deadly sin week starts Monday. See you then, gluttony.
Thanks Joanne!
